Me? a Princess?? Shut Up!

This content was originally posted on my Instagram, @chancrews.

You can have dwarfism and be a princess.

It’s been in the news recently, but after seeing @impact’s post today, ‘The new “Snow White” live-action movie decided to create CGI dwarfs instead of casting real little people,’ it just gave me another reason to roll my eyes in the back of my head and say, “what else is new?” and also prompted the following:

I don’t feel there is a right or wrong opinion on this topic. Those who don’t have dwarfism or who aren’t impacted by (or have a close connection to) dwarfism will want to hear what those in the dwarfism community have to say about this.

However, you may not realize that we’re just like everyone else. We have different opinions on almost EVERYthing…in fact, some will even argue that my opinion is redundant because I went through limb lengthening and “altered” my body; therefore, I don’t have the right to speak on this matter, but I do.

This topic truly is a tale as old as time and one that will always have a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” argument.

I understand what Peter Dinklage was saying, and after a conversation in my DMs, I agree that I think his initial comments were taken out of context.

At the same time, I validate those in the community who disagree with him and feel that his comments are what led actors with dwarfism not to be cast.

As a lifelong consumer of entertainment and media, I think the remaking of fairytales is way overdone and lazy.

Even though I’m not in the entertainment industry, I feel passionate that Hollywood could do better about creating roles for actors with dwarfism based on their acting skills & abilities and not just on their body type.

I never truly felt one way or another when I would see the dwarves, munchkins, and oompa loompas in Snow White, The Wizard of Oz, and Charlie in the Chocolate Factory because I just saw them as make-believe.

Just a little (no pun intended) manic Monday post for you.
